The USBExt3c is a high-performance, managed USB-C hub with integrated bidirectional USB and power extension.  This listing is for a single USBExt3c, for a pair of extenders, see the two-extender kit

Why buy only one?

On its own, a USBExt3c is a single-port software-managed USB hub with extensive port monitoring and control, like a one-port version of our USBHub3c with added Ethernet control and PoE power features.  Control via the HubTool GUI application and Brainstem API for interactive and automated workflows.

port-level features

  • Full port control — Verify and force USB link speeds, enable and disable ports to set enumeration order, independently control USB 2 and USB 3 lines. Set maximum connection speed to force specific data rates
  • Virtual “cable flip” — Independently test USB functions on either side of the USB-C connector with optional Universal Orientation Cable (UOC)
  • Plot, log, and decode —Plot VBUS voltage and current, log and decode PD negotiation and send arbitrary VDM PD messages (*)
  • Hot-Plug stress testing — Automate cable connect/disconnects without physical interaction. Script plug-cycle stress testing

Flexible Power

  • Up to 100 W USB-PD power can be input to either numbered USB port or the Control port.
  • Provides up to 90 W USB-PD per port when using 100 W PD supply.
  • Programmable DC power source* — Available USB ports can provide up to 21 V DC  to non-PD devices using an optional adapter cable
  • Accepts PoE++ power over the extension port ( IEEE 802.3bt Class 7 input for up to 60 W shared USB-PD output)
  • Emulate any PD source up to 90 W:
    • Test USB-powered devices against any charger they might encounter
    • Full independent control of VBUS and advertised PDOs to emulate out-of spec devices and over/under-voltage conditions (*)

Maximum Control

USBExt3c has several control options to integrate into your test system or installation.

  • Dedicated Ethernet Control port:  Supports HubTool, BrainStem API, RESTful server, and web interface
  • USB: control from the active USB host or control from the dedicated USB power/control port.
  • RS-232 serial and GPIO interfaces

Extendable Capabilities*

USBExt3c’s capabilities can be expanded with optional add-on software features.

Software Add-on Features

  • PD-Builder: Customize local port Power Data Objects (PDOs) to emulate various PD source capabilities. Includes Power Rule Editor
  • Vbus Validation: Override Vbus voltage set points and current limits to test a sink’s response to incorrect voltages. Enables each port to act as a controllable DC power supply with independent voltage and current limits (2.8 – 21 V, 0 – 5 A)
  • PD Logger: Log PD communications across all USBExt3c ports. Provides message decoding, including power negotiation, alternate mode negotiation, and VDM data display
  • Serial Control: Enable control of the USBExt3c via RS-232 serial interface

Mounting Options

USBExt3c features M4 mounting threads on either side for surface / rack shelf mounting via L-bracket feet or connect to DIN rail via adapter. All USB ports accept single-screw locking USB cables to make sure everything stays connected.

Applications

Industrial and Test Applications

  • Managed USB-C port testing: Use per-port enable/disable, controlled connection sequencing, and constrained link negotiation to reproduce enumeration scenarios in lab or factory test.
  • Regression and plug-cycle stress: Automate connect/disconnect and port power state changes to generate repeatable plug-cycle stress across device and firmware revisions.
  • Orientation-dependent test: With an optional UOC, validate USB behaviors across connector orientation without manual cable flippping.
  • USB-PD test and debug:  Using PD-Builder, VBUS Validation, and PD Logger, exercise sink response to altered PDO advertisements and controlled VBUS set points, and capture PD negotiation and VDM traffic for analysis (*).

standalone and extender modes

S150 standalone and extender modes

    •    Standalone mode:  Use USBExt3c as a local managed hub with Ethernet-based control and programmable power behaviors for bench and rack test stations.
    •    Extender add-on: If you later discover that you need two more ports, remote power, or USB extension, add a second single-extender kit to form an extender pair.

HubTool Application

The HubTool interface presents a unified dashboard to interactively control and view the state of USBExt3c. Free download for Windows, MacOS and Linux distributions.

BrainStem API

Control and automate all USBExt3c functions with the BrainStem API (C, C++, Python, LabView, .NET). Integrate into your test scripts or custom applications.
